Les Années 80, époque musicale pas si lointaine que cela: Medieval Steel

Dans cette série de chronique, notre homme à tout faire Charles-Alexandre Tourchot propose de découvrir ou de redécouvrir des groupes qui seraient passés sous le radar. Il se concentre sur des formations qui on produits des albums dans les Années 80. Bonne lecture.

Medieval Steel 

Formée en 1982, le groupe de heavy metal Medieval Steel est une petite perle pour les amateurs de Métal traditionnel.  

Leur E.P sorti en 1984 est constitué de

4 Chansons s’enchaînent à merveille.

La première chanson éponyme nous met très bien dans l’ambiance.  

Une introduction de clavier sombre et une voix grave et intriguante débute.  

Ensuite les instruments s’enchainent pour laisser place au chanteur. Une très bonne chanson!  

La suivante, Warlords commence avec un riff de guitare entraînant, s’en suit la batterie. Le premier solo de guitare est impressionnant et le deuxième quant à lui l’est tout autant.  

Battle Beyond the Stars succède à Warlords.  

Dès les premières notes de la chanson, immédiatement je suis accroché, les instruments et le vocal sont très bien agencés.  

Le EP se termine avec la balade Echoes. Probablement ma chanson préférée. À mon goût elle ferme bien la boucle, une finale tout en douceur après trois chansons qui étaient plus agressives.

Au niveau du son, l’album sonne très bien, il sonne comme un album enregistré dans les années ‘80. Le vocal est typique de ce qu’on peut s’attendre de ce type d’album. Il est très bien structuré.  

Le Chanteur a une gamme vocale impressionnante! Autant dans les aiguës que dans ce qui est un peu plus grave. On reste sur une vocalise qui est assez aiguë.  

Les guitares et la basse se marient très bien, lors de la composition on y reconnaît la passion des deux guitaristes. Les solos de guitares rentrent au poste ! La basse n’est pas trop présente, elle apporte un petit quelque chose de subtil. 

Au niveau de la batterie, c’est simple mais très efficace. Le tout est bien composé.  

Beaucoup de groupes de métal citent cet EP comme étant une très grande influence. 

À l’époque, une version vinyle est sortie. De nos jours, elle coûte quelques billets de 100$ sur internet.  

Des rééditions ont été faites en 2024 par le label High Roller Records. CD/ K7 et vinyle.   

Le groupe a ensuite sorti une démo en 1989 tout simplement intitulée Demo’89 

Le groupe s’est dissous et reformé à quelques reprises. Un changement de nom a même été fait: Fire Choir.  

Pour finalement revenir à Medieval Steel.  

C’est en 2004 après avoir constaté que le groupe était apprécié au niveau de l’underground, soit 20 ans après la parution du premier E.P que les choses ont bougées.  

En 2005 la compilation The Dungeon Tapes est sortie, constituée du E.P éponyme, de chansons composées en 1987 d’une session démo: Tears in the rain et Lost in the City ainsi que de nouveaux enregistrements des chansons: To Kill A King, Ghost From The Battlefield ainsi que Eyes Of Fire.  

Depuis 2012 Ils sont plus actifs qu’auparavant. 

2013 sera l’année de la sortie du premier album, s’en suivra deux autres. Gods of Steel en 2022 et Blood Moon en 2024.  

Ces sorties ont très bien relayé le E.P. 

Un groupe tout aussi efficace qu’à leur début.  

Le chanteur a une voix qui s’est très bien préservée. Lui qui est le seul membre original de la formation.

Medieval Steel

Formed in 1982, the heavy metal band Medieval Steel is a hidden gem for fans of traditional metal.

Their EP, released in 1984, consists of 4 songs that flow together wonderfully.

The first self-titled track sets the perfect mood. A dark keyboard intro followed by a deep and intriguing voice starts off. Then the instruments kick in, giving way to the singer. A really good song!

The next track, Warlords, begins with a catchy guitar riff, followed by the drums. The first guitar solo is impressive, and the second one is just as good.

Battle Beyond the Stars follows Warlords. Right from the first notes of the song, I'm hooked—both the instruments and vocals are well-arranged.

The EP ends with the ballad Echoes, probably my favorite song. In my opinion, it closes the loop nicely, offering a soft finale after three more aggressive tracks.

In terms of sound, the album sounds great—it has that classic '80s vibe. The vocals are typical of what you'd expect from this kind of album. It’s well-structured.

The singer has an impressive vocal range, both in the high notes and in the deeper ones. The overall vocal tone leans toward the higher register.

The guitars and bass blend together very well, and you can hear the passion of the two guitarists in their compositions. The guitar solos really stand out! The bass isn't too present, but it adds a subtle something to the mix.

The drums are simple yet very effective. Everything is well put together.

Many metal bands cite this EP as a major influence.

Back in the day, a vinyl version was released. Nowadays, it can go for a few hundred dollars online.

Reissues were made in 2024 by High Roller Records, available in CD, cassette, and vinyl formats.

The band then released a demo in 1989, simply titled Demo'89.

The band disbanded and reformed a few times, even changing their name to Fire Choir, before eventually returning to Medieval Steel.

In 2004, after realizing the band had gained a following in the underground scene—20 years after the release of their first EP—things started to move forward.

In 2005, the compilation The Dungeon Tapes was released, including the original EP, songs composed in 1987 from a demo session: Tears in the Rain and Lost in the City, as well as new recordings of tracks like To Kill A King, Ghost From The Battlefield, and Eyes of Fire.

Since 2012, they’ve been more active than ever.

2013 marked the release of their first full album, followed by two more: Gods of Steel in 2022 and Blood Moon in 2024.

These releases have done a great job of keeping the spirit of the EP alive.

The band is just as effective as in their early days. The singer, the only original member left, has kept his voice in great shape.
